Common Misconceptions about Al-Waqiah

This Surah is surrounded by many myths and misunderstandings that often overshadow its true spiritual purpose. In reality, it is a profound spiritual treasure, not a worldly “quick fix”. By approaching it with proper understanding and avoiding superstitions, we unlock its true transformative power for both this life and the Hereafter.

This is the Book about which there is no doubt, guidance for those conscious of Allah” (Quran 2:2)

Myth 1: “A quick scheme to get rich”

Many believe it is a magical formula for instant wealth. While the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

Whoever recites it every night will never face poverty” (Ibn Majah),

This doesn’t mean:

  •  Money will rain from the sky.
  • No need to work for halal income.
  • Immediate financial miracles.

Reality:

The protection from poverty comes through

  •  Barakah (blessings) in existing wealth.
  •  Contentment with what Allah provides.
  • Spiritual protection from wasteful spending.

Myth 2: “Must Recite Exactly 40 Times”

Some claim you must recite it:

  • 40 times continuously.
  •  Only on specific nights.
  • With exact formalities.

Reality:

While 40 days is a known Islamic spiritual practice period:

  •  No authentic hadith specifies this number for this Surah.
  • The Prophet (ﷺ) simply recommended regular recitation.
  • Sincerity matters more than counting repetitions.

Myth 3: “Only About Material Wealth”

People often focus only on financial benefits, ignoring:

  •  It’s warnings about Judgment Day.
  • Descriptions of Paradise and Hell.
  • Lessons about Allah’s creative power.

Reality:

The Surah’s complete message covers:

  • Touheed (Oneness of Allah).
  • Resurrection and accountability.
  • Spiritual wealth beyond money.

Myth 4: “Certain Ayats Alone Bring Results”

Some isolate Ayats like:

  • Ayah 35 (about Paradise companions)
  • Ayah 89 (about peaceful death)

believing they work like spells.

Reality:

The Quran must be:

  • Understood as a whole.
  • Recited with proper intention.
  • Combined with righteous actions.

Myth 5: “Women Can’t Recite During Menstruation”

Some incorrectly think:

  • It’s haram to recite during periods.
  • Touching the Mushaf is required for benefit.

Reality:

Women can:

  • Recite from memory.
  • Listen to audio versions.
  • Reflect on meanings.
